16-year-old arrested; planned shooting with explosives at Berkeley High, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to participate in a mass faculty taking pictures that might have included a bombing at Berkeley High Faculty, police say. 

The teenager was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Department stated in a press launch. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no college that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing destructive machine supplies and threatening to commit a criminal offense which is able to result in dying or nice bodily damage.

Police stated they obtained a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a capturing that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police didn't say if the teen was a student at Berkeley Excessive College.

Upon executing the search warrant, police said they discovered elements to explosives and assault rifles, several knives, and digital gadgets that might be used to create additional weapons. 

At that time, a warrant was obtained for the teen's arrest.

"Faculty security stays a high precedence for the division," police mentioned in a statement. 

Particulars on whom the teen was attempting to recruit weren't disclosed. Police said this case stays under investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens advised the varsity's neighborhood that the district was in shut contact with police during this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teenager's weapon components, the district relied on police expertise to assess any potential ongoing threat to its faculties. The district communicated with police on the scholar's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions throughout this period, we alerted our administrative and security employees about this investigation and, as is our customary apply, maintained close contact with our BPD Faculty Useful resource Officer on the Berkeley Excessive Faculty campus," Stephens wrote. "All through the investigation period, we had been assured that this particular person did not pose an immediate menace to the Berkeley High School neighborhood."

The district is conducting their own investigation on this matter. 

The district may pursue disciplinary motion against the coed. 

In addition, a city hall assembly titled: 'The best way to Talk to Children About College Violence' offered by Alameda County Office of Education is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m.
