16-year-old arrested; deliberate shooting with explosives at Berkeley Excessive, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to take part in a mass school shooting that would have included a bombing at Berkeley Excessive School, police say. 

The teen was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Department said in a press release. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no college that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing harmful device materials and threatening to commit against the law which is able to result in dying or great bodily harm.

Police mentioned they acquired a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a taking pictures that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police didn't say if the teen was a scholar at Berkeley Excessive School.

Upon executing the search warrant, police said they found parts to explosives and assault rifles, several knives, and digital items that could possibly be used to create further weapons. 

At that point, a warrant was obtained for the teenager's arrest.

"College security remains a high priority for the division," police said in a statement. 

Particulars on whom the teenager was making an attempt to recruit weren't disclosed. Police mentioned this case remains below investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens advised the college's group that the district was in shut contact with police throughout this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teenager's weapon elements, the district relied on police expertise to evaluate any potential ongoing danger to its schools. The district communicated with police on the scholar's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions during this period, we alerted our administrative and safety employees about this investigation and, as is our customary apply, maintained close contact with our BPD College Resource Officer on the Berkeley High College campus," Stephens wrote. "Throughout the investigation interval, we had been assured that this individual didn't pose a right away risk to the Berkeley Excessive School community."

The district is conducting their own investigation on this matter. 

The district may pursue disciplinary motion against the coed. 

In addition, a city hall assembly titled: 'How to Speak to Children About College Violence' offered by Alameda County Workplace of Training is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m.
