A California district attorney declined to file fees Tuesday against former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson after he was recorded on video in a bodily altercation with one other passenger on a JetBlue flight.
San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe made the choice after having reviewed police stories and movies of the April 20 incident. Both the passenger, who has not been identified, and Tyson requested that no charges be filed.
"Yesterday afternoon the San Mateo County District Lawyer’s Office concluded its evaluate of the case involving Mike Tyson at the San Francisco Airport on April 20, 2022 and the allegation that he dedicated a misdemeanor battery in opposition to one other passenger on an airplane while ready on the terminal prior to departure," Wagstaffe stated in a press release.
"Our determination is that we'll not file any costs in opposition to Mr. Tyson based mostly on the circumstances surrounding the confrontation. These include the conduct of the sufferer main up to the incident, the interaction between Mr. Tyson and the victim, as well as the requests of each the victim and Mr. Tyson that no charges be filed in this case," Wagstaffe mentioned.
The case is now closed.
Cellphone video confirmed Tyson, 55, appearing to try to punch someone who was pushing him away. Representatives for Tyson mentioned the person was harassing Tyson. The video didn't show what occurred before the altercation.
David Chesnoff, Richard Schonfeld and Martin Sabelli, attorneys for Tyson, responded to the choice to not file charges by thanking Wagstaffe, the San Mateo County sheriff and regulation enforcement companies "for his or her careful, diligent, and professional work."
