Speaking in the dugout of the Nice American Ballpark in Cincinnati, Ohio, Kapler mentioned, "I do not plan on popping out for the anthem going ahead until I really feel higher concerning the course of our nation."

Later, Kapler wrote about his disillusionment with what he called "the lack of delivery of the promise of what our national anthem represents."
"I'm not okay with the state of this nation. I wish I hadn't let my discomfort compromise my integrity. I want that I could have demonstrated what I realized from my dad, that when you're dissatisfied along with your country, you let it's identified by means of protest. The house of the brave ought to encourage this."
