Apple has discontinued the iPod, 20 years after it was launched.

The US tech big mentioned its iconic music player has been changed by other gadgets, making the iPod redundant.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide advertising, stated: "Today, the spirit of iPod lives on.

"We've integrated an unimaginable music experience across all of our merchandise, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and throughout Mac, iPad, and Apple TV.

"And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound quality with help for spatial audio - there is not any higher solution to take pleasure in, uncover, and experience music."

In October 2001, Steve Jobs debuted the original iPod and it was the first MP3 player that might hold 1,000 songs and had a 10-hour battery life.

"With iPod, Apple has invented a complete new category of digital music participant that allows you to put your entire music assortment in your pocket and listen to it wherever you go," he said at the time.

"With iPod, listening to music won't ever be the same once more."

Related MP3 players released by Microsoft and Sony didn't have the identical success because the iPod.

Apple has launched five variations of its music player - the Basic, Contact, Shuffle, Mini and Nano.

The corporate has been slowly killing its iPod range in recent years, with mobile phone technology enabling prospects to take heed to music providers on their telephones.
