Die Seitenbesitzer erkannten direkt den Wert einer lieblings Listung in Resultaten und recht bald entwickelten sich Firma, die sich auf die Aufwertung qualifitierten. In Anfängen passierte der Antritt oft bezüglich der Übermittlung der URL der jeweiligen Seite bei der diversen Suchmaschinen im WWW. Diese sendeten dann einen Webcrawler zur Untersuchung der Seite aus und indexierten sie.[1] Der Webcrawler lud die Internetseite auf den Webserver der Suchseite, wo ein zweites Software, der sogenannte Indexer, Informationen herauslas und katalogisierte (genannte Ansprüche, Links zu diversen Seiten). Die neuzeitlichen Varianten der Suchalgorithmen basierten auf Infos, die anhand der Webmaster eigenhändig vorliegen werden, wie Meta-Elemente, oder durch Indexdateien in Suchmaschinen wie ALIWEB. Meta-Elemente geben eine Gesamtübersicht über den Thema einer Seite, dennoch stellte sich bald heraus, dass die Verwendung der Vorschläge nicht verlässlich war, da die Wahl der genutzten Schlüsselworte durch den Webmaster eine ungenaue Beschreibung des Seiteninhalts sonstige Verben kann. Ungenaue und unvollständige Daten in den Meta-Elementen vermochten so irrelevante Seiten bei charakteristischen Suchen listen.[2] Auch versuchten Seitenersteller vielfältige Merkmale im Laufe des HTML-Codes einer Seite so zu manipulieren, dass die Seite überlegen in den Resultaten aufgeführt wird.[3] Da die zeitigen Search Engines sehr auf Faktoren abhängig waren, die allein in den Fingern der Webmaster lagen, waren sie auch sehr vulnerabel für Schindluder und Manipulationen in der Positionierung. Um höhere und relevantere Vergleichsergebnisse in Suchergebnissen zu bekommen, musste ich sich die Operatoren der Suchmaschinen an diese Voraussetzungen einstellen. Weil der Erfolg einer Suchseite davon abhängt, wichtige Suchergebnisse zu den inszenierten Suchbegriffen anzuzeigen, vermochten untaugliche Testurteile zur Folge haben, dass sich die User nach anderen Entwicklungsmöglichkeiten zur Suche im Web umgucken. Die Rückmeldung der Suchmaschinen lagerbestand in komplexeren Algorithmen fürs Platz, die Aspekte beinhalteten, die von Webmastern nicht oder nur kompliziert beeinflussbar waren. Larry Page und Sergey Brin konstruierten mit „Backrub“ – dem Urahn von Bing – eine Recherche, die auf einem mathematischen Suchalgorithmus basierte, der anhand der Verlinkungsstruktur Websites gewichtete und dies in den Rankingalgorithmus reingehen ließ.
