The policy, disclosed in leaked emails Musk despatched to Tesla's government staff Tuesday, was first reported by electric car information site Electrek.

"Anyone who needs to do remote work have to be in the workplace for a minimal (and I mean *minimal*) of 40 hours per week or depart Tesla. This is less than we ask of factory workers," Musk wrote, adding that the workplace should be the worker's primary office where the other workers they recurrently work together with are based mostly — "not a distant department office unrelated to the job duties."

Musk said he would personally review any request for exemption from the policy, but that for essentially the most part, "If you do not show up, we will assume you have resigned."

Tesla (TSLA) didn't respond to a request for touch upon the coverage change, but Musk appeared to verify it in a tweet of his own early Wednesday when requested on Twitter, "Hey Elon...any further comment to individuals who suppose coming into work is an antiquated concept?" Musk replied: "They should pretend to work some place else."The policy is totally at odds with that of the opposite tech firm Musk is trying to buy, Twitter (TWTR), which has previously announced workers can proceed to make money working from home "without end" if they like. "Wherever you feel most efficient and inventive is the place you'll work and that features working from home full-time without end," CEO Parag Agrawal wrote in a notice to Twitter's practically 100,000 workers in March, just before Musk's interest in owning the social media platform was disclosed. At Tesla, nonetheless, that will not be the case. It's especially important that senior managers be seen within the office, Musk mentioned, including that was one of many causes he essentially lived on the Tesla factory in Fremont, California, when the company was struggling to extend manufacturing in 2017 and 2018.

"If I had not completed that, Tesla would long ago have gone bankrupt," he wrote. "There are after all corporations that do not require this, however when was the final time they shipped an important new product? It has been a while."

He added, "Tesla has and will create and really manufacture the most exciting and significant products of any company on Earth," he added. "This is not going to occur by phoning it in."

Surveys show the majority of workplace employees desire the option to work from home. Since reopening places of work following Covid-19 shutdowns, many companies beyond Twitter have announced elevated flexibility for workers who want to work remotely, partly as a strategy to retain or entice talent in a particularly tight labor market. However the world's richest particular person would not appear involved about that dynamic.
