During the Uvalde shooting, an off-duty federal agent’s spouse texted him for assist. “I requested my barber if he had a gun,” he said.

Jacob Albarado was in his barber's chair when each males obtained textual content messages about the shooting unfolding at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, final week. "There's an energetic shooter. Assist. Love you," Albarado's wife Trisha mentioned in three messages at 11:41 a.m.

She's a fourth grade trainer at the school, and their daughter is a student there.

"I requested my barber if he had a gun," Albarado, a U.S. Customs and Border Safety agent, told CBS News on Wednesday. He had attended an awards ceremony on the school earlier that morning and was off responsibility, along with his weapon at home.

The barber did have a gun. Albarado took it, a shotgun, and they rushed to the chaotic scene. Law enforcement officials were already there, and Albarado started serving to.

"Children are popping out the home windows," he stated.

With individuals fleeing to a funeral residence across the road, Albarado said he needed to get inside the college as fast as he could.

"I was acting as a husband and a father," he stated.

His wife let him know she made it to the funeral home, however she instructed him their daughter was locked in a faculty restroom.

"I didn't know what restroom," Albarado said.

He ultimately realized his daughter was in a restroom situated inside her classroom. Albarado met up with two officers close to the classroom.

"We need to get the youngsters out of here," Albarado said he instructed the officers. "… The shooter's over there. We need to get the youngsters out. That is our time."

The officers started opening classroom doorways, and Albarado said he guided individuals to security.

"First classroom, second classroom, third classroom, saw my daughter," Albarado stated. "Aid. Large reduction."

He hugged and kissed her, and soon she was heading to the college parking zone.

Whereas Border Patrol agents were on the crew that breached the classroom where the gunman was holed up, Albarado wasn't in that group.

"I did not have my gear, and so it would not have been a good move for me to get into the constructing," he stated. "I didn't have my vest. A shotgun's not a ok defense."

During a press convention final week, the pinnacle of the Texas Department of Public Safety said the varsity district's police chief didn't initially send officers into the classroom where the gunman was situated because he thought it was now not an active-shooter state of affairs. The U.S. Justice Division is conducting a review of the police response.

For his half, Albarado said he wasn't able to evaluate the response.

"I know my fellow officers," he stated, "and … to me, coronary heart of hearts, I believe they were doing all the things in their energy they may do."
